Vietnam F1 Grand Prix 2027: Status Update & Circuit History
What is the Future of the Hanoi F1 Circuit in 2027?
As the global calendar for F1 looks ahead to 2027. Many fans are asking if F1 will ever get to the starting grid in Vietnam. Currently, there is no official news about whether Vietnam will ever return to the F1 Calendar. Even as early as 2027, it seems highly unlikely.
But, back in early 2020, Vietnam were proud to becoming one of the newest exciting additions to the Formula 1 calendar. The Hanoi F1 Street circuit was complete, with stadiums built & the whole world watching.
An exciting prospect for many F1 enthusiasts who were all looking forward to what was likely to become the best street circuit in the world.

We at Travel Agent Hanoi were partners with F1 Grand Prix Vietnam and already had dozens of clients booked for their trip. A Vietnam Grand Prix package including airport transfers, hotels, tours and Formula 1 tickets.
We were ready to join the ranks offering exclusive F1 Hanoi Grand Prix packages. So what has happened to the Hanoi F1 Street circuit.

The 2020 Dream: A Track Like No Other!
Let's take a look back at 2020 and why this track was meant to be groundbreaking for its time. Designed by Hermann Tilke, the Hanoi F1 track was a hybrid & combined street with a permanent circuit. It was 5.65km in length with one of the longest straights in the sport at 1.6km long. This would have allowed F1 cars to reach eye watering speeds of 335 km/h. Unlike the tight corners of Monaco, Hanoi was built for high speeds and overtaking drama with heavy breaking zones.
By March 2020, we were ready, but the global pandemic & local changes in administration, forced the circuit to close down.
Why the Engines Fell Silent!
Just a few weeks before the start date, everything went wrong. While covid was the main reason for shutting down the project. A shift in administration and the key advocate of the F1 in Vietnam being removed. Vietnam's chances of appearing on the F1 Calendar during the 2021 - 2026 years, was ever increasingly impossible.
For the last few years, while the main pit grandstand is still a landmark of the past. The "Ghost Circuit" lies dormant, with the high quality asphalt of a racetrack now being pounded by daily traffic of buses, cars and motorbikes. Also as recent as 2025, it was being used as a military vehicle assembly point for the Independence parade.
Nowadays, parts of the track have been opened to the public for cycling and public events. Standing on the finish line gives a surreal perspective to what might have been.

Looking Toward 2027 & Beyond!
Will F1 ever return to Vietnam? While Hanoi may not be in the organisers list of their meetings for the new F1 Calendar. We cannot totally discount the idea of a return to F1 for Vietnam Grand Prix. The organisers are always looking for ways to expand into Asia with more circuits and venues. A lot of the work had already been done in Hanoi, would it be easier to start there than begin from the beginning elsewhere? Or is the racetrack now too costly to replace or upgrade?
There has been talk of a rotating calendar, whereby venues host every two years or so. So the option to include Hanoi F1 again, could be exciting. However, at the moment, the venue at Hanoi F1 remains a "Ghost Circuit" for now.
